Motive × Context

Published April 2026  ·  17 min read
Abstract

Why does the same consumer who walks past a flagship every morning for six months finally walk in on an ordinary Tuesday? Motive × Context is an original framework for luxury consumer psychology built on a refusal: there is no stable 'luxury buyer.' There is a person, and a moment, and the intersection of the two. The framework maps the motives that drive luxury purchases against the contexts that activate them — who is watching, what is at stake, what the buyer is about to walk into — and shows how brands misread their customers when they design for a motive without designing for the context in which it fires. Enclothed cognition, sensory sequencing, and the difference between armor and costume all pass through the same intersection. The full edition includes the complete activator map and applied cases.
